Tool lifecycle model – tool design, reconditioning, PVD coating and recycling of metal cutting tools
We provide services for the entire lifecycle of metal cutting tools.

Tool lifecycle model – an efficient solution for managing the lifespan of metal cutting tools
At JR-Tools, we believe that a high-quality metal cutting tool is not a disposable investment. It is a controlled, optimised solution throughout its entire lifecycle. Our lifecycle model, based on circular economy principles, covers every stage from tool design and manufacturing to tool reconditioning, PVD coating and recycling. This ensures maximum tool life, performance and cost-efficiency for our customers.
We have developed our operating model based on customer feedback. Our long-term work was recognised in 2025 with the Circular Economy Act of the Year in Central Finland award. This recognition highlights responsible business in manufacturing, reducing the carbon footprint of tools while delivering cost savings to customers.
We are also proud of our Finnish origin. Our tool reconditioning service and the special metal cutting tools we design have been awarded the Key Flag symbol as proof of Finnish work.
Tool lifecycle management starts with tool design
Our tool designers design metal cutting tools based on customer-specific requirements. These include, for example, machining methods, the material to be processed and the machine type. We always aim for cost-efficiency and provide guidance on improving the machining process.
We ensure that
- tools are optimised for their specific application
- processes are efficient and repeatable
- total costs are controlled from the very beginning
The customer receives a tool drawing, and when needed, also cutting data recommendations, material recommendations and 3D models for CAM systems.
PVD coating improves tool performance and tool life
PVD coating is a key part of both tool manufacturing and tool reconditioning. It has a significant impact on tool durability and performance. Our range includes several single-layer and multi-layer coatings for wet and dry machining. PVD coating always includes pre- and post-treatment to optimise tool life and functionality. We can also tailor coatings to specific customer needs.
We operate our own Platit AG PVD coating units, which means the entire process is fully under our control from start to finish.
Monitoring tool usage and identifying the right reconditioning interval
It is essential to monitor tool wear in production and recognise when a tool should be sent for tool reconditioning. We provide guidance and training when needed.
For example, a standard 5–7xD drill can typically be resharpened around ten times before reaching its limit. A new hob, on the other hand, can be resharpened approximately twenty times when used correctly and serviced regularly. Extending resharpening intervals is a false economy, as damage can escalate and quickly consume the remaining tool material. This shortens the tool lifecycle and leads to premature replacement.
Tool reconditioning as part of lifecycle management
Regular tool reconditioning is a critical part of optimising tool lifecycle. We recondition metal cutting tools with high precision, ensuring performance equal to new tools.
Our service can be tailored to customer requirements. We follow customer-specific resharpening instructions and can label reconditioned tools with JR Labels including product data and barcodes. This makes identification and storage easier.
We recondition, for example, drills, end mills, thread taps, reamers, gear shaper cutters, hobs, broaches, broach inserts, countersinks, boring bars and other tools.
Each tool is individually inspected upon arrival. The customer receives information about tools that are beyond repair together with the order confirmation. This allows immediate reaction and ensures production continuity without unexpected tool shortages.
Logistics and ensuring tool availability in production
Our tool reconditioning service includes our own service car that collects tools from the customer and returns them after reconditioning. Collection and delivery are included in our service pricing. We also provide safe and practical service boxes for transporting tools.
Our service car currently operates in Central Finland, Pirkanmaa, Southern Finland, Southeast Finland, Southwest Finland, Ostrobothnia and Eastern Finland.
We also offer shelving and storage services for tools. This ensures fast deliveries and secures production continuity, even in unexpected situations. Tools are restocked during regular service rounds.
Tool recycling
When carbide and HSS (high speed steel) tools reach the end of their lifecycle, they should be recycled. Carbide scrap in particular has high value and offers good return. Customers can choose whether we purchase the scrap or credit its value against tool reconditioning orders.
In addition to improving cost-efficiency, recycling reduces the carbon footprint of tools. Tool recycling is a concrete sustainability action for any machine shop.
Why choose the JR-Tools lifecycle model?
By using our lifecycle model, customers benefit from
- longer tool life
- more reliable and sustainable tool solutions
- lower total costs
- more efficient and dependable production
Our lifecycle model combines tool design, manufacturing, tool reconditioning, PVD coating and recycling into one seamless solution. It can be tailored to the needs of any Finnish machine shop.
